On May 27, 2014, Mayor Judy Ritter, Deputy Mayor John Aguilera, and our City Council Members: Amanda Rigby, Dave Cowles and Cody Campbell gave a unanimous positive vote for not one, but TWO skatepark locations in Vista.
As you may recall, we had another full Council vote in February of this year, for two park locations, and after public response, updated one of the locations to another (and bigger, better!) spot. We now have our two location addresses and are already beginning the Grant and funding process!!!
On behalf of the Vista Skatepark Coalition Board and Members, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Mayor, Council, City Manager, Parks & Recreation and the numerous City Staff Members, who have made this possible for the youth of our City.
March 16, 2014 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition skated for the second year, at the North County St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We were joined by some of our Friends from the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, it was awesome fun!

October 25, 2013 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition hosted another “Create-A-Skate” workshop at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Using the skateboard decks the Club kids painted with us in May, we taught them how to safely grip tape a skateboard, and get creative with color! October 24, 2013 – Please join The Vista Skatepark Coalition in congratulating President Jack Flaherty in being named Co-Chairman of Bike Walk Vista. Jack has been a member of the Committee since it began over the summer. Walk San Diego and the VVBA were instrumental in bringing citizens together, to be the advocates and voice of the community for the upcoming Bike Master Plan, and alternate transportation considerations.
We wish to thank our drive sponsor, and the wonderful staff members at the Vista Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber was very supportive during the Coalition Book Drive for the Kiwanis of Sunrise Vista. The Chamber was the first to have a collection box in support of the event. Thank you Chamber! Support like yours makes our events a success! The Coalition honored the Chamber with a Certificate of Appreciation, presented October 3, 2013.
During August and September, the Vista Skatepark Coalition Members hosted a children’s book drive, benefitting Vista school kids; for the Kiwanis of Sunrise Vista’s book "hope chest.” The Coalition delivered our book collection to the Kiwanis on October 2, 2013, with a total of 147 books! We wish to thank our drive sponsors, and the wonderful staff members at: Wells Fargo Business Banking Escondido, Vista Chamber of Commerce, Prohibition Brewing Co. Thank you for supporting Vista youth!
While hosting the book drive for the Kiwanis of Sunrise Vista, we received numerous additional books, and it was decided to share with the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. The Coalition delivered our book collection to the Club kid library September 24, 2013, with a total of 133 books! Thank you again to everyone who donated, and to our awesome sponsors! Vista Skatepark Coalition President, Jack Flaherty, volunteered at the 4th Annual Moonlight Cultural Foundation Golf Classic, Monday, September 30, 2013; benefit the Moonlight Cultural Foundation. It was a great event including Golf, dinner, a silent auction and much more. Thank you to the Foundation for this great volunteer opportunity! The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the Boys & Girls Club of Vista’s annual “Day for Kids,” Saturday, September 21, 2013. This year’s theme was “Pledge to Play,” with games, art, music, food, a carnival and tons of fun!
We hosted a booth with skate art projects, painting neat finger boards the kids got to keep!

The Vista Skatepark Coalition was invited to present to the Vista Rotary Club on September 10, 2013. The Coalition presented an introduction to our Organization as well as our Skateable Art Concepts slide show to the Members. We appreciate the opportunity to meet with the Rotary, for their positive comments, and their commitment to writing letters on behalf of the Coalition. We wish to thank the Members for allowing us to present to them, and for their support.
The Vista Skatepark Coalition was invited to present to the Gang Prevention Committee on September 5, 2013. A new Coalition presentation, “Why are Skateparks Beneficial to Communities” was shown to the Committee. Hosted by City of Vista’s Kathy Valdez, the Committee includes staff from Lifeline, Vista Community Clinic, the Sheriff’s Department Gang Prevention Task Force, the Probation Department, Child Welfare Services, and VUSD schools. We wish to thank Kathy for this awesome opportunity to address this vital Committee.
“A 5 year Anniversary”
The original Vista Skatepark was closed on August 8, 2008 for the new Civic Center to be constructed. The old Skatepark, built in 1997, was very popular and frequented by many.
Over the past couple of years, the Vista Skatepark Coalition has become a Non Profit Corporation, members of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, and has participated in City Council meetings, Parks and Recreation meetings, and numerous community events. Including the Vista Chamber of Commerce, Vista Village Business Association, the Boys and Girls Club of Vista, The Pride of Vista Lions, Kiwanis of Sunrise Vista, and many, many more community Organizations and businesses.
The Coalition Members continue their community outreach at Vista community events, volunteering for local organizations, hosting skateboard classes and art at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Holding book drives, toy drives, and donation collections for various Organizations including Kiwanis of Sunrise Vista, Operation Hope and the Susan G. Komen Fund to name a few.
The Coalition Board works tirelessly with the City of Vista, the Vista City Council, City Manager, Parks & Recreation Commission and the Vista Chamber of Commerce on plans and options for skateable sculptures, skate dots and skate spots, and ultimately a full skatepark facility for Vista.
While 5 years is a milestone, that time has been well spent working hard for the project, the youth of Vista, and the greater community. We wish to thank the Vista citizens, the Vista Organizations and local businesses and the City Leaders for their continued and unwavering support of the project and the Vista Skatepark Coalition.
The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the 11th annual National Night Out, Walk Against Crime on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. The City of Vista and the Vista Sheriffs' Department hosted the community event; including music with the live band "Â Los Gatos Blancos", and learning about crime prevention and local resources at various information booths. Vista joined communities across the nation in celebrating National Night Out. This annual event brings neighbors and communities together.
The Vista Skatepark Coalition wishes to thank Vista City Councilman Dave Cowles, and Councilman Cody Campbell for their support; and recently attending our Create-A-Skate and Build-A-Skate Workshops at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. July 23, 2013 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition invited some of the children from the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, to paint a “Chair for Charity” together. The kids did an awesome job painting with us, they had a great theme, “Hearts & Hands,” and they worked very hard. Thank you kids, we are so proud of you!
July 23, 2013 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition invited some of the children from the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, to paint a “Chair for Charity” together. “Chairs for Charity” is an event sponsored by Art Beat on Main Street, Vista Art Foundation, the Wellness Center and local businesses; to help raise funds for art supplies for local Vista charities. They are on display in Art Beat and other businesses along Main Street for silent auction. The final auction will be held on August 3rd at the Smokin’ BBQ Cookoff. Be sure to bid on our chair!
July 20, 2013 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the Vista Historical Society Ice Cream Social. Thank you to the Society and its Members for the wonderful sweet treats, it was a lovely event! July 6, 2013 – The Vista Skatepark Coalition participated in the Bike Friendly Vista “Crafty Ride” celebrating the 4th of July Holiday weekend! We decorated our bikes and rode through downtown to create awareness. The Coalition is keeping involved with the Bike Friendly Vista, Bike/Walk (Skate) Vista Organizations, and SANDAG, to ensure that skateboarding continues to be considered as an alternate sport and mode of transportation; especially as the Inland Rail Trail is planned through Vista.
June 27, 2013 - The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended a Bike/Walk Vista meeting, June 27, 2013, presented by Bike/Walk Vista and the City of Vista. The Coalition wants to be involved with this Committee, to ensure that Officials consider “ALL WHEELED” pathways, open to not only bikes and walkers, but also skateboards, skates, scooters, etc. During this meeting, we took a “fieldtrip” walk to Santa Fe to observe traffic and discuss the upcoming changes to that street.
Friday, June 21 – National GO SKATEBOARDING DAY! The Vista Skatepark Coalition hosted another “Create-A-Skate” workshop and Learn to Skate session at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Coalition President, Jack and Coalition Secretary Lyssa with the Club kids and some finished skateboard decks. We had a great time learning to do grip tape!

May 8, 2013, The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the Vista Chamber of Commerce May Sundowner at First National Bank of Southern California. Sundowners are a great place to meet people and tell them about the skatepark project. We had a super time with Barry the Strawberry, getting ready for the Strawberry Festival!

We were lucky enough to spend some time with Miss Pride of Vista, Jordyn Kogler, and Miss Teen Pride of Vista Alondra Alanis. We had an awesome day!

The Vista Skatepark Coalition hit the Coach House for another killer concert! Legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde, (lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne for over 20 years, and currently Black Label Society) performed the final show of this “Bringing Metal to the Children” tour. With book reading, stories, and a Q & A. This was a once in a lifetime chance to see him perform up close and personal……literally! He was amazing!! Truly one of the best guitarists ever!

The Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the Robert Freeman art showing at Art Beat on Main Street. Mr. Freeman is a Native American master artist and print maker. During the showing, he gave us demonstrations of his etching process. The music of the evening was CloudFeather, featuring VVBA President, Mario Carrillo and his family. A beautiful blend of Native American music with a contemporary folk pop sound.

April 13, 2013, the Vista Skatepark Coalition attended the Miss Strawberry Festival Pageant. And amazing 34 wonderful ladies turned out to compete for the Vista Strawberry Queen title. Our congratulations to every one of you, you all did such a great job! Our special congratulations to Miss Stephanie Packard, the 2013 Strawberry Festival Queen, and her court: Princess Pilar Altman, Princess Aliah Williamson, Princess Helen Rigby and Princess Angie Geck!
